Robert (Robin) Speer 1735-1813

IN ABOUT 1760, ROBERT SPEER , WHO WAS BORN IN 1735, CAME ACROSS THE ATLANTIC OCEAN IN A SAILING VESSEL, THREE MONTHS BEING TOSSED BY THE BILLOWS OF THE GREAT OCEAN. HE SETTLED IN ADAMS COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA. HE WAS COMPELLED TO LEAVE HIS NATIVE LAND WITH OUT HIS PROMISED BRIDE, JANE AGNES STUART, WHO WAS BORN IN 1739, WHOSE PARENTS OBJECTED BECAUSE OF HIS POVERTY. WITHIN A RELATIVELY SHORT TIME HE WAS WELL ENOUGH ESTABLISHED TO RETURN TO IRELAND AND CLAIM HIS BRIDE. (THE DATE OF THEIR MARRIAGE IS THOUGHT TO BE ABOUT 1863). FAMILY TRADITION HAS IT THAT JANE’S PARENTS CONTACTED ROBERT AND SAID HE SHOULD COME AND GET HER – THAT WITHOUT HIM SHE WAS WORTHLESS.

SOME TIME BEFORE TO THEIR PASSING, THEY ENTERED INTO A DETAILED ARTICLE OF AGREEMENT WITH THEIR SON WILLIAM WHO AGREED TO RETURN TO THE FARM IN GETTYSBURG FROM HIS HOME ON A FARM ADJOINING NEW CONCORD, OHIO.
JANE AND ROBERT DIED ON THEIR FARM IN GETTYSBURG, ADAMS, PENNSYLVANIA. JANE DIED ON 8 MAY 1813 AND JANE DIED ON 11 MAY 1813. BURIAL WAS AT LOWER MARSH CREEK CEMETERY NEAR GETTYSBURG.
